It is Friday and I actually have five minutes to join in over at Lisa-Jo’s place for Five Minute Friday. The challenge is to set a timer for five minutes and just write, no editing when done. Just hit “publish”.
Today’s prompt is “Home”.
Timer set…
GO!
I pack suitcases and we heave them into the car and pull out of our country driveway.
We are off to spend a night at my parents house so we can be there early in the morning for a funeral the next day.
Pulling in the driveway of my parents home, the van comes to a stand still, the engine is turned off, and as Mr. Sharkshoes gets up out of his seat and jumps out of the van he joyfully exclaims, “Its so good to be home!”
He is now six and has lived on the otherside of the world for most of his life and though we live only an hour and a half away from the grandparents, THIS HOUSE is home to him. My oldest daughter echos the sentiment as she gathers her books and heads off to curl up on Grandma’s couch to continue reading.
Night falls and I fall into bed and listen to silence.
There is peace and quiet, though they live in suburbs with houses on either side.
As I wake up in the morning to the pitter-patter of squirrel feet running across the rooftop. I smile, happy that it is not the sound of trucks jake-breaking down the hill or the thunderous noise of Harleys headed north to tour the Lancaster, PA countryside. For though we live in the country, we live on a very noisy, heavily traveled, main road.
I lie still and listen to the quiet, and whisper thanks to God for the peace.
It is good to come home to the quiet and familiar.
Home, a place of quiet rest.
STOP.
