Noticing His Light

Have you ever noticed that you see the sunbeams more when they are set against dark clouds or are somehow obscured by clouds?
When there are no clouds we don’t tend to notice the light.
When it is bright and sunny you don’t stop to notice the beauty of the sunbeams.
Aren’t we a bit like that?
It is when there are clouds around us that we stop to see His Light in our life and we focus on it more.
As we face storms and troubles and get through them depending on God, that is when people notice the Light more in our life?
It is in our weakness that God shows through the cracks in our clouds. It is there where He shows himself strong and we stop to wonder at the beauty of it.

My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.

Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities,
that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
Therefore I take pleasure
in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses
for Christ’s sake:
for when I am weak,
then am I strong.
~2 Corinthians 12: 9&10

Gratitude: Preparing To Celebrate

My blogging has been rather sporadic lately. Life has just been full and not necessarily of fun fuzzy good stuff but just of stuff sucking the energy out of me. At the beginning of this year I made a pact with myself to stick with my gratitude listing. Even if I can’t seem to keep up with posting several times a week, I will at least continue this. Of course you all may get rather bored just reading my list week after week with nothing else thrown in. BUT I am working on it. I promise!

I have some big exciting stuff coming up. I am moving this old blog in celebration of my 40th birthday and the blog’s 2nd Anniversary. So help me decide:

Do I move the blog now? (just so excited I can hardly stand it)

OR

Do I practice self-control and move it closer to my birthday? (a week and a half away)

On Being The Moon

I glance out the window while filling the coffee pot, I noticed the moon. To the naked eye there did not seem to be this much light on the horizon.

I went out on to the deck to have a better look and went back to get my camera.

As I stood there staring at the light it was reflecting, you could see the whole moon… part in shadows… but the side that was lit was so much more brilliant than I ever remember noticing. As if I could just reach out and touch it. It made me think if I just looked left I would see the sun blazing away.

How much I want to be like the moon reflecting the sun. How much I want my life to shine for Jesus so that others will have the urge to look for the Son- Light. Does my life shine Jesus to those around me? To my children? and those I interact with through the week? to the grocery checker at the store dragging coffee and chicken across scanner? to the lady at the post office who takes my packages and mails them across this ocean and that ocean? to those who read what I write … in this space … in that space … or even in that space?

What is the purpose of my Hike if not to shine Jesus? Like a flashlight helps me see down my trail in the dark, do I help others see down their trails so that they can have more of His Light?

Be the moon, Reflect the Son.

Gratitude: Victory

“Through God we shall do valiantly:
for he it is that shall tread down our enemies.”
~Ps. 108:13

It is through Him, Philippians 4:13, for he is the one who gives victory over our enemies;

who have names like doubt, fear, worry and stress.

Has the song Victory in Jesus just started playing in your mind too?

Praise God!!

Courage, part 2

As I think more about yesterday’s post, about walking out on that “knife edge”…

The story of Peter walking on water comes to mind.

It took courage to take the risk of stepping out of that boat.

He did not think of the risk involved until after he was out of the boat with both feet and committed to the task.

What caused his fear? and my fear?

Looking around at the surrounding danger.

Looking down and not up.

: :

Courage takes faith.

Courage takes trust.

As Christians, our courage is found in our faith in Christ.

As we walk in his will, there will be risks.

When He calls us to do something, He equips us for the task.

“And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord,
who hath enabled me,
for that he counted me faithful,
putting me into the ministry”
~1 Timothy 1:12

But how often do we forget that?

Fear comes when we look around and see the risk we have taken, taking our eyes off of Christ.

When we take our eyes off of Christ, fear and worry will settle in if we don’t follow Paul’s urging in Philippians 4.

“Be careful for nothing;
but in every thing by prayer and supplication
with thanksgiving
let your requests be made known unto God.
And the peace of God,
which passeth all understanding,
shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
~Philippians 4:6&7

prayer + thanksgiving = peace

He follows it up in the next verse by telling us what we are to focus on instead:

“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true,
whatsoever things are honest,
whatsoever things are just,
whatsoever things are pure,
whatsoever things are lovely,
whatsoever things are of good report;
if there be any virtue,
and if there be any praise,
think on these things.
~Philippians 4:8

(The phrase “focus on the positive” comes to mind.)

In the next verse Paul urges us to follow his example:

“Those things, which ye have
both learned,
and received,
and heard,
and seen in me,
do:
and the God of peace shall be with you.”
~Philippians 4:9

How often we find it helpful and encouraging to fellowship with someone who has walked a similar path and has done it successfully.

Isn’t that why God calls us to comfort and edify one another?

“Let us therefore follow after
the things which make for peace,
and things wherewith one may edify another.”
~ Romans 14:19
“Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another,”
~ 1 Thessalonians 5:11
Edify means to teach, to guide, to instruct, to improve, to develop, to build.

How did Paul do it?

“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”
~ Philippians 4:13

The one that enabled him, equipped him, 1 Timothy 1:12.

He followed Christ’s example, and we are to do the same.
